Why I Recommend a Pregnancy Pillow as a Midwife

Why I Recommend a Pregnancy Pillow as a Midwife

As a midwife, I have worked with hundreds of mums-to-be, and one of the most common concerns during pregnancy is discomfort, particularly when it comes to sleep. Pregnancy places a lot of strain on the body, and finding a comfortable position at night can be a real challenge. That is why I always recommend using a pregnancy pillow for support.

Supporting the Bump and Reducing Pain

As pregnancy progresses, the added weight of the bump can put pressure on the lower back, hips, and joints. A pregnancy pillow helps relieve this strain by supporting the natural curves of the body, allowing mums-to-be to rest more comfortably. This is especially important for those struggling with back pain or pelvic discomfort, which can become more pronounced in the later months.

Encouraging a Safer Sleeping Position

From 28 weeks onwards, midwives advise sleeping on your side, as this can help improve circulation to the baby and reduce the risk of complications. A pregnancy pillow makes side sleeping easier by providing support that prevents rolling onto the back. Many mums I work with find this especially helpful, as it gives them peace of mind while they sleep.

Reducing Swelling and Improving Circulation

Swollen feet and legs are a common issue in pregnancy, often caused by fluid retention and reduced circulation. Elevating the legs using a pregnancy pillow can help reduce swelling and improve blood flow, making mums feel more comfortable, especially towards the end of pregnancy.

Beneficial Beyond Pregnancy

One of the best things about a pregnancy pillow is that it is not just for pregnancy. Many new mums continue using their pillow for breastfeeding or bottle feeding, as it provides great support while holding the baby. It can also be a lifesaver for postpartum recovery, helping with rest and relaxation in those early weeks after birth.

My Advice to Mums-to-Be

Pregnancy is an exciting but physically demanding time, and sleep is one of the most important things you can prioritise. A pregnancy pillow is a simple yet effective way to improve comfort, reduce pain, and support your body through every stage. If you are struggling to get a good night’s sleep, I highly recommend giving one a try – it can make all the difference.
